Asics Ltd, originally began as the Onitsuka Co and was founded on 1st September 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, he began to manufacture basketball shoes in his home town of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
Onitsuka produced a range of Olympic shoes which were used in a variety of different sports by athletes all over the world. The Mexico 66 design was one of the most popular styles at this time with its distinctive crossed stripes.In 1977 Onitsuka Tiger merged with GTO and JELENK to form the Asics Corporation, even with this name change a vintage range of Asics shoes were still produced under the Onitsuka Tiger brand name.
